Madison (Maddie)

Posted on August 12th, 2010

Madison and I first met Dr. Barb Royal the summer of 2003. Madison had been having trouble getting up from the floor at the age of 6yrs old. Our previous vet had taken x-rays of her hips and diagnosed that she had no hip dysplasia (but didnʼt diagnose what the cause was) and prescribed daily doses of Rimadyl. I found this unacceptable and was searching for a better option. Plus, our previous vet was not open to my home feeding methods or holistic approach. I had heard that there was an acupuncturist working at Family Pet Animal Hospital and decided to book an appointment immediately. continue reading...

Emma

Emma, almost 5, is my fifth Irish Wolfhound. She has all the wonderful qualities of a Wolfie which allowed her to qualify as part of the Canine Therapy Corps. She is also a huge IW for a female. She first met Dr. Royal socially, at the open house fund raiser for CTC. At that time poor Emma was not a happy camper but was doing her best to keep her IW spirit and smile. She was pushing 203lbs, had been previosly diagnosed with early onset arthritis in her paws, had chronic ear issues and now was faced with eating diet dog kibble. I felt frustrated as her human because I could not make the pain or weight go away. continue reading...

RexRex began seeing Dr. Royal over two years ago, when he was 13. His arthritis had reached the point where we noticed he was no longer running, and occasionally he would even limp. Dr. Barb put Rex on a course of acupuncture and underwater treadmill therapy. We saw results literally within two weeks — he began running again, and his whole demeanor changed. He sprung back to life. He even began to tolerate, and actually accept, the existence of his obnoxious, 1-year-old Shepherd/Golden mix younger brother. Rex was not too keen about that addition to the family, having been the solo dog for 12 years. (Rex is still firmly convinced his younger canine brother is really an alien from another planet.) continue reading...

In December 2008, my six year old Siamese cat was dying.  “Yin” was very thin, listless and in pain.  Her last diagnosis was pancreatitis, but, I had taken her to three vets over a three month period and gotten as many diagnoses.
Treatments changed with each new theory and she continued to go downhill fast. continue reading...
