If you are experiencing an overly itchy dog this season that may be related to oak mites. It can make their whole body itchy and not show the typical lesion . . .
Oak mites can make some dogs VERY itchy (not all dogs react) – and it can continue for 4 weeks or so . . . and most injectable or oral treatments don’t work well, but topicals can help.
Dr. Royal’s recommendation are to try any of these a few times a day:
- Use 10/10/10 topically
- Dabbing on aloe juice
- Cortisol cream (check with vet)
- 50:50 mix of Chamomile tea and Green tea and soak feet/dab on (Make the teas as you would to drink and mix them and let them cool and use to dab or soak.
- Apple Cider Vinegar – 1 part ACV to 3 parts Water and dab on
- Epsom salt soaks
- I have also successfully used Clove oil — mix 12-16 drops in a Tbsp of coconut oil -because it can numb an area of a few hours and is antibacterial as well. NOTE: It is too strong to use straight clove oil! ALWAYS dilute in a mild oil.
Continue to periodically keep them from chewing feet raw with cotton socks (Woodrow Wear Dog Socks) or a cone if they are chewing too much. Owners please update us regularly!
